The brownie only survives in cool unpolluted water. Unlike the rainbow trout the brown trout is native to Britain. It loves well oxygenated streams and rivers and lakes particulaly those fed by springs or fed by mountain run off.

THE LIFE CYCLE OF THE TROUT.

To spawn the brown trout needs fast flowing shallow water. For those fish living in lochs and lakes they move to the feeder streams to spawn. Spawning season for the trout is between November and January and the female digs two or three holes in the gravel and lays her eggs. Those eggs that are not buried properly are quickly taken by predetors. The hatchlings know as alevins eat their yolk sack first and then small water creatures. Growth is dependant upon food supply where there is an abundance of food the fish are bigger and grow faster.

TROUT FEEDING.

As the trout likes fast flowing water then they tend not to move very far instead allowing the water to bring their food to them. Loch and lake trout have to be more active but no matter where the trout resides unnatural looking flies will be ignored by the trout. During the colder months the trout will feed in deeper water but they will move to the surface when the temperatures rise and insects become more active.

Therefore the fly used by the angler should replicate as near as possible a life like fly to ensure a greater degree of bite success. Weather the angler is looking for cultivated or wild brownies the fact is that you are probably never more than 25 miles from a trout.
