The gurnard has a large boney head with its eyes positioned high on its head. It has three feelers on the pectoral fin. The pectoral fin is large and fan shaped and vividly coloured. The gurnard has a tapered body and a smooth lateral line. There are six species with the tub guranrd being the most common.

A strange looking fish the gurnard and because of this they are easily identifiable. There are six different species of gurnard as while they are a distinctive species distinguishing between the six species is difficult.

GURNARD FEEDING.

The gurnard has developed a specialised pectoral fin. The first three rays have developed into three feelers which are packed with taste buds. The gurnard walks its way over the sea bed probing away for crabs small fish and shrimps. Gurnard are also an excellent fast swimmer and will readily chase down pilchards and sand melts.
